The problem with New World's current gear system is that it has become a chore rather than something to be excited about. Players are expected to change their gear every time they encounter a new mob, which is an unrealistic and tedious task. This has led to gear becoming meaningless and not memorable, which has caused the game to fail in the eyes of a lot of players.
The introduction of gear set storage on the Public Test Realm (PTR) is a step in the right direction, but it is not enough. Players can already store their sets in different tabs of their storage shed, so why should they pay for something that saves them almost no time? The problem is not how many slots or storage we have, it is how ridiculous gear is, to begin with.
Rather than creating more tabs in our storage shed, developers should focus on making New World gear sets more about chosen aesthetics and less about what it does. The new system should be meaningful and exciting to collect, instead of turning it into a chore. As much as players would like to see the ward system removed, it is unlikely to happen due to the popularity of the system.
The best solution would be to make gear meaningful and memorable by allowing players to color code, their gear. This would make it easier to distinguish between sets, as well as make it more fun to collect them. Additionally, craftable gear should never be the best option for running dungeons or raids, and should instead be used to fill the gap between fresh 60 and endgame content.
Overall, the problem with New World's gear system is that it has become a chore rather than something to be excited about. As much as players would like to see the ward system removed, it is unlikely to happen due to its popularity. Therefore, the best solution is to make gear meaningful and memorable by allowing players to color code, their gear, while making sure that craftable gear is never the best option for running dungeons or raids.
